Who Are the Cardless? An Exploratory Analysis


As we have discussed in other documents, credit card holding by households dropped precipitously between 2009 and 2010 based on Mercator’s CustomerMonitor Survey Series data. But it is easy to overlook the fact that the consumer category growing fastest during this period is the cardless: those who do not hold a regular payment card of any type. Are these the “unbanked” by any other name? Not necessarily.
