Emerging SEPA Card Schemes


The demand from the European regulators for alternative local European card schemes other than Visa and MasterCard, as well as the ongoing scrutiny into Interchange rules and practices have been the central issues in the transition to SEPA for cards. As the regulators seemed determined to have at least one viable local alternative before they would give the green light for the industry to move forward, Mercator looks at the emerging SEPA card schemes, their market positioning, impacts on the industry, and their long term strategies.
