Chip Cards and the U.S. Market: Global Payments Go Local


In a recent article on chip cards, the following statement appeared: “Experts predict that American credit card issuers might develop a chip-and-PIN card that’s designed specifically for European travel. The banking industry agrees that this is a possible approach.”

The ongoing implementation of chip-and-PIN card technology in Canada is sparking conversations within the United States payment industry that pits one side against the other in an argument that may go on for quite some time. But, let’s be clear. Chip cards, or smartcards, can be contact or contactless in form and can be issued as credit cards, signature debit cards, or PIN debit cards.
