Tim is the VP of Payments Innovation and the Director of the Emerging Technologies Advisory Service. Mercator’s Emerging Technologies Advisory Service (ET) focuses on the business impacts of these new technologies and their potential for issuers, merchants, card networks, acquirers, and the vendors competing on this tech driven landscape.Background
Tim has been innovating for four decades. Tim installed one of the first ATMs and managed SWIFT installations and has acted as a custom hardware and software developer for many years. As a product Manager of International Data Communications, he managed a team of more than 100 throughout the US and the International Telecommunication Research Center in Belgium. Under his leadership, the team produced data communications products that included TCP/IP, SMTP, X.25, X.21, SNA, IPARS, and SWIFT protocols, to name just a few and Tim sat on several international standards bodies including the X.400 and the Navy DIF standard. In 2000, Tim helped found and was VP of Strategy at a start-up that created an XML translator to connect the supply chains of an unlimited number of business partners through the net, one of the very first cloud solutions that used SSL to both establish identity of participants and encrypt internet traffic.
As one of the original founders of Mercator Advisory Group in 2003, Tim headed up the Debit Advisory Service as its director. In 2004, he created the prepaid taxonomy and benchmark which helped define the prepaid market and helped establish common terminology that guided the industry. With widespread interest in prepaid, Tim established the Prepaid Advisory Service at Mercator Advisory Group in 2005. In this role Tim and his team have tracked the evolution of virtual cards and mobile wallets and predicted that mobile distribution of prepaid will become a significant new distribution channel for merchants and those companies the merchants partner with. Tim also established a review of 17 mobile devices, identifying the best in breed customer support currently deployed and identifying several key extensions that wallet developers should consider for next generation wallets. In recognition of the high level of service he provided to the prepaid members, Tim was promoted to the vice president of Client Services in 2007 to guide Mercator’s service delivery methodology and to deploy the companies CRM solution. To reflect Mercator Advisory Group's commitment to excellence in payments research, the company created the position of Vice President of Payments Innovation in 2014 and appointed Tim Sloane, founding member of Mercator Advisory Group, to fill the position.
Tim has served as an expert witness in federal and state courts and contributed to FDIC research. He is widely quoted in both financial and industry press including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Paybefore, American Banker, and Digital Transactions. Tim is a highly sought after speaker both domestically and abroad. He has participated at industry events that include The Prepaid Expo, ATM, Debit & Prepaid Forum, CFSI Underbanked Financial Services Forum, EFTA, ETA, NACHA, etc. and has spoken at private events hosted by a wide range of industry participants including the ABA, American Express, Citi, FIS, Fiserv, First Data Corporation, Incomm, and MasterCard.EducationUniversity of Bridgeport, Electrical Engineering.
